A Picture Is Worth A Thousand Words

On March 28, 2014 I visited John Morris, the world renowned Senior Photo Editor for Life Magazine. Mr. Morris opened his gorgeous semi-modern home to us, filled with seating and photography books. The participants of the communication seminar and advisors filled the room delighted to hear about his approximately 86 yearlong commitment to the art of photojournalism. He shared his experience editing and taking photos of world events during important times in history.

One story that stuck out to me was the one about his time spent in Vietnam during the War. His graphic details of how he lost a friend that was a photographer sadden me. I enjoyed his presentation of photos that he edited very much. It gave me a new appreciation for photojournalism. I now see and appreciate that photojournalists sometimes put their lives in danger in order to inform the people with visual depiction, about what is happening in the world. If it wasn’t for them, we would not have detailed images in our newspapers or text books that give us a visual perspective of what was happening at a specific moment in time. I feel that this appreciation should be shared amongst other students who don’t understand the genetics behind photojournalism. In order to begin a movement, I believe that people should invest partial time in reading news articles and magazines about photojournalism and photography. Developing this habit will make a person more aware about photojournalism and strengthen their appreciation for the industry.
