A Parisian Awakening

In Texas, we like our cars big, we walk slow and yes we speak loudly! When arriving at Charles de Gaulle, I immediately noticed how Parisians move quickly and aren't very loud or excessive in behavior. They move with a purpose. I quickly picked up on being aware of those that move at a quicker pace around me so that I can move out of the way. In Texas, we usually ride escalators and seldomly put forth the extra effort of climbing up the steps at the same time. But, in Paris it's different. It is normal for Parisians to climb up the escalator while in motion, and custom for those riding the escalator stand to one side so that others can pass through. In Texas, it's rare to see that. Maybe, this is because Texans are just not that concerned with time or time being wasted.

As well, I took note of how Parisians take the time to sit, watch and enjoy the company of others. In Texas we are quick to eat our food, pay, leave and head to the next destination. Parisians eat, drink wine and enjoy each other's company for hours at a time. Observing moments like this inspired me to slow down in my daily life and take the time to enjoy all that surrounds me. It is so important to connect and communicate with others, and give others your time and attention. It is so much more rewarding and healthier. So far, Paris has been a beautiful and enlightening experience!

  1. It is interesting to me that you point out that Parisians climb escalator and walk like they are pressed for time but then they also take time to sit and enjoy themselves when dinning.
